Financial Assistance

A number of benefits are available to assist in payment of funeral expenses, including:

WINZ Grant

A WINZ Funeral Grant is Governmental help to cover the basic costs of a funeral.

It is income and asset tested, and there are certain requirements to be eligible.

This grant covers the cost of:
Body care
Casket
Newspaper notices
Hearse fees
Cremation fees

The maximum rate of the Funeral Grant is currently $2,559.20 as of April 2024

Hope Funerals cannot apply for a WINZ Funeral grant on your behalf, although we are happy to assist in this process including getting all the forms and information.

Compassionate Air Fares

What is a compassionate Air Fare?

When a loved one passes, often immediate family members need to travel from out of town to attend the funeral.

Air New Zealand assist these ones by providing a reduction on some fares.

How do I apply for a compassionate Air Fare?

It is best to apply after the funeral service, when you have the necessary documentation. To apply, follow these steps:

Phone the Air New Zealand refunds team on 0800 733 8637 with your booking or ticket reference number. The staff will advise you as to whether you are eligible for a partial refund
If a partial refund is due, Air New Zealand will supply you with appropriate forms to fill out and return
Contact us on (07) 543 3151 and we will send you a letter of confirmation for you to forward on to Air New Zealand
